Streamcast Technologies and Enemalta partner on $90m underground data centre

Infrastructure preparation works are expected to be concluded before the end of 2017 with servers and other hosting components being lowered to the tunnels in 2018.

Maltese power company Enemalta and IP cloud operator Streamcast Technologies have entered into a partnership to build a €75m ($89m) underground data centre in the south-eastern region of Marsa.

Through the agreement, Streamcast Technologies will use Enemalta’s underground facilities to install a Tier 4 data centre.

The underground facilities, which in total run through 1.8Km of tunnels, are geared up with the necessary connectivity for the data facility and are also connected to international fiber optic networks.

Streamcast  is a private IP cloud operator currently powers wired and wireless operators to deliver on-demand video streaming, live events, VOIP and video chat to over 33 million users across India, South East Asia and MENA.

According to the companies’ schedule, by the end of 2017, Enemalta is expected to have concluded the necessary infrastructure preparations on site.

Streamcast ICT network engineers and technicians will also be sent to Malta to coordinate the project with the support of Enemalta’s business development team. The servers and other equipment of the new data centre will be installed in 2018.

Enemalta chairman Fredrick Azzopardi, said: “Securing the necessary resources to continue offering our customers efficient and reliable electricity services at some of Europe’s lowest tariffs is a tough challenge we need to overcome every day.

“Consolidating Enemalta as a lean and financially-sustainable enterprise means that we have to be creative and seek new ways of diversifying our operations and maximising the potential of our resources.”

Streamcast chairman Nimish Pandya, said: “The crystallisation of this relationship between Enemalta and Streamcast gives us an immense sense of happiness. I firmly believe that this is a unique partnership with lots of potential.

“The synergies emerging from our collaboration are going to be tremendously beneficial to the economy of Malta. We are proud to be a part of this development. Our new partnership with Enemalta ideally fits into the growth strategy of Streamcast.”
