Amazon could be about to break ground on MEGA 120-acre disaster recovery data centre campus
Operating under a different name, company already has eight facilities either in operation or under construction in the region.
Amazon’s need for data centre power could soon see the company start construction of a 5.2 million sqf data centre complex in Oregon.
The company has already acquired the piece-of-land west of Hermiston and has officially put forward proposal plans to build four data centre buildings, according to the East Oregonian.
The e-commerce giant already operates data centres in nearby counties including Umatilla and Morrow.
Amazon first arrived in Oregon in 2011, and has since them been carrying out its data centre expansion under a holding company named Vadata.
Jim Footh, real estate development manager for Vadata, wrote to the Umatilla County Planning Department that the company needs to build more data centre campus to secure the right backup and disaster recovery in case services fail at one of the other buildings.
He said: “We cannot create that redundancy and risk aversion by developing a single, super-size data centre campus.
“Rather, to achieve redundancy and risk aversion, our campuses must be located a few miles apart.”
The news of the data centre campus driven by the need to expand the company’s backup needs comes days after an AWS outage nearly broke the internet.
According to another letter from Footh to the city of Hermiston, Amazon plans to use the city’s water system to help with cooling processes.
In the letter he tells officials that the complex would need 1,818 litres of water per minute.
Speaking to East Oregonian, Byron Smith, Hermiston city manager, said any improvements made to the city’s water system in order to respond to the data centre campus’ needs will have to be paid by Vadata.
In addition to the new campus, Amazon is also set to build a fourth data centre in at the McNary Industrial Park east of Umatilla.
Vadata has currently eight data centres either in operation or under construction at both Umatilla and Morrow.
Amazon’s Oregon potential new campus is just the latest large development the company is set to initiate.
Ten days ago, news emerged that the company is planning to invest as much as €1bn in building a new data centre campus in Dublin, Ireland.
